FINALLY done with this painting. As simple as it is in terms of colors, the damn thing took so long to get all the whites and blacks JUST SO

Ok so just some weird conjoined goat imps, chillin', I wanted to semi-replicate a printmaking look and I think I did ok, it's not perfect. It's pretty cool in real life though, it's about 12" x 24"

The left one clearly isn't having the right one's shit. I named them Flotsam and Jetsam because Jason asked what their names were. It was a few nanoseconds from being Batman and Robin so I think I made the right decision.

Stack of Dogs

Mostly just a monster dog because of boredom (crayolas again) but this sorta relates to old drawings of “stack of dogs” I used to make as a little kid. I made a dog mouth once out of an acute angle (like you do when you’re 5) and just kept making a bunch on top of eachother like a zig-zag and when I added teeth I added teeth to all the angles, I can’t remember who called it stack of dogs, one of my parents probably.

So I figure I need to do a comic and I'm exploring some ideas with this character. His name is Beneath (Benny for short) and that's his rabbit I haven't named yet.

He was born in an underground society of his species (which I haven't named yet) who are all red with long noses and have varying lengths of tail. My theory is they split off post-ice age and adapted a little differently for their lives underground, went deeper into the caves instead of coming out like humans. For years they traded with humans and stayed relatively in touch, there's some half-and-halfs here and there (gonna claim gingers have their genes a bit lol) and after a while tended to be blamed for maladies like dead livestock or plagues or what have you and eventually in the middle ages were labeled as demons.

I figure after the whole "demon" thing they give up on them and just stick around underground and the only sightings are labeled as cryptozoological at best, aliens and things.Anyway, I'll flesh out more of that when I get to posting some more stuff on it.

So this is Benny and a bunny in the clothes he wears above-ground (which I realized looks like the guy from that DOS game Treasure Mountain hahaha).

OK TOO MUCH TEXT more later when I draw more of the designs and get some story fleshed out.

Ponies and Monsters

Decided work was for CHUMPS today and used some 3 inch crayola colored pencils that were given to me in a crumpled Walgreens bag to draw this pony zebra. The crayolas are only in weird colors like I have 2 teals and a green metallic and various colors of opaque orange but I don’t have any red, so I decided to draw an interpretation of a My Little Pony I had as a child since she’s weird colors too. It was the only one I had and eventually I mohawked her mane (which was apparently pink and not green, I looked it up after I drew it oops - here's the toy I had)

Guess she’s gotten a bit on in years but she’s still alright in my book. She made a good mount for my street sharks and extreme dinosaurs. On the ride home to the little tykes dollhouse. Through the streets lined with Jengas and paved with the occasional curled-up dead centipede.

This is the main character to a little tale I'm cooking up about underground dwellers, he doesn't have a name yet or anything, I've got some of the story worked out but I don't know where it's going yet. The character is based on the characters in my Rat Men painting. Not my best drawing, but I like it anyway.

So I've been playing D&D lately with some friends and my boyfriend left his monster manual over here and I decided it might be fun to try and tackle the ABC's of the D&D monster manual. I want to do a little style playing too so they won't all look the same, this one's pencil and photoshop.

A is for Arrowhawk -

An arrowhawk is a predator and scavenger from the Elemental Plane of Air. By twisting its body and varying the cadence of its wingbeats, an arrowhawk can fly at top speed in any direction.

Arrowhawks are extremely territorial and always hungry. They attack almost any other creature they meet, seeking a meal or trying to drive away a rival. The primary mode of attack is an electricity ray, fired from the tail. The creature also bites, but it prefers to stay out of reach.

Also, no legs.

I hated the old painting like a lot a lot so I made a new one. I'm not sure I'm happy with the text, but it gives it a little ground it didn't have before I added it. I definitely like it better than the old one but I do have to say my scanner murdered the wood color.

Started this painting in like September of last year, finally finished it. I will say that the scan looks like 500000x better than the actual painting, the actual painting looks pretty shitty really but my scanner somehow made it look good (odd since it usually makes it look awful 6 _9)

Named after the controversial Vaslav Nijinsky ballet, not really the traditional faun/satyr (looks gargoyle-y actually) but I think he's hungry-looking enough to be pretty sexually motivated like fauns. Only thing missing is goat legs, but I liked the regular man-legs.

Even after nearly a year this painting was good enough to finish, that's not a good sign I really need to paint more D:

2010 Art vs Art Competition

This is my 2010 Art vs Art competition painting! Paint day was yesterday and now it's up for vote online! If you love me (like I love you unf) you'll go and vote for 3 paintings you dig on the voting site: RIGHT HERE

The concept of the competition is you go and paint for a day with supplied materials and it goes into voting with a load of other paintings. At the big Main Event, 32 paintings make it to the floor where people can vote for the ones they want to see on stage. 16 paintings make it and go round by round one on one with an applause-o-meter deciding the victor. The loser spins the wheel of DEATH and if it's not "Instant Death" it gets auctioned off. If no one wants it, that shit gets DESTROYED in various ways (such as chainsaw, katana, paint thinner, jackhammer, or "dirty sanchez"). It's an amazing competition and I could only get a tiny photo from the site (some are larger than others for whatever reason) but the canvases are all 18x20.

So, a few rad things happening as of late! I was just informed my coin went through to participate in Drawgasmic this year, it's a huge gallery show where a huge load of artists make images of the same size and orientation and are hung up on a wall in grid format. There's a lot of rad artists up already, including a few that I know. It also all goes in a one-night gallery show and a coffee-table-style book they'll publish for the event in St. Louis, MO. Second on the list (and I actually found this out a while ago) I'm going to be published in the American Illustration 29 annual! It's a massive honor and such an incredible opportunity to get my name out there. I think it's in the student section (the works published were from when I was a student) but I'm getting 2 images published! Third, I have a potential lead for showing Tattooed Love Boy in a Tattoo-themed show near Detroit (will give more details as they come).

And finally, I sold one original and one framed print in the last week and the cash made up for the time I missed out on at work because of panic attacks.

And we're thinking of getting a cat, I just hung out with a friend from high school for the first time in ages, my anti-depressants are starting to work, and I have bean soup so even though my show at the restaurant was cut short, life's pretty awesome! Keep it fake, kiddos!

Just a little update, the show I mentioned in my last post was cancelled prematurely because of some lease issues with the landlord of the building the restaraunt was in so they've closed down for now and I've taken the paintings down and am hoping for the best for them. They've told me if and when they get back up and running, they'll give me a ring so here's to hoping all goes well. I know there aren't many of you in the area that read this blog, but in case you'd planned to go, sorry to disappoint. I'm pretty bummed myself.

Last week I participated in a local event called Art vs. Art.

It's a painting competition where at the main event, paintings go head to head and fight to the death. Been getting into Star Trek lately, yeah yeah maybe it's because of the movie, but in my defense I've wanted to get into it for over a year but just...was...too poor to do so. But anyway, I wanted to do some really epic fanart of my favourite ~~Vulcan~~ ~~adorable pointy-faced alien~~ character from the show-

Stayed up until 5AM to do this one, but I had a lot of fun making it!

I Monster - Start to Finish

Hey kids!

So I thought it might be fun to post a piece from start to finish, let you get to know the way I work and the ridiculous amount of process there is!

Well first, I had the assignment. This was an independent assignment, not for any sort of client, so I decided to do a poster for a song on I Monster's new album "A Dense Swarm of Ancient Stars". If you don't know who they are, here's the song that inspired the poster:

Sorry about it cutting off, but the video isn't important since it's just a picture of the album cover. It's the music that matters anyway!

The next step was the sketch. I actually had another sketch in blue pen on some scrap of lined paper, but I can't seem to find it so I'll have to omit that sketch. The next step was the preliminary sketch to get my ideas down.

The idea stems from the eye in the center (emblazoned with "I") on a two-faced fly monster in a suit. This was inspired by the cover of Neveroddoreven, I Monster's previous album cover.

The things in the hands are a CFL bulb on the left and a candle on the right, relating the candle to the old psychedelic style and the CFL to the new electronic style that are both present in I Monster's music. I was thinking a semi-Alphonse Mucha, semi-psychedelic feel so I put together a comp based on some Mucha-esque imagery and an old I Monster album cover (though in this comp, they're covered up by my own imagery).

My next step was to get down the linework. I printed my comp large-size and traced it onto some illustration board. Just to get it down, I used a brush pen, thinner Microns, and black paint.

Following this, it was onto PAINT. I used acrylic and glazing medium to have the linework show through some. However, I did have to go over a lot of my lines, but this process is awesome because not all my lines show through which I think is a really cool effect.

This is the sort of junky scan and un-refined painted image. I don't always make a point in my work to make the actual real media image the final step, in fact it makes it a lot easier if I don't. Finally, I used the computer to adjust colors, move some stuff around for composition (namely the "I, MONSTER" text) and add the text at the bottom.

And then squeedily deedily, you're all set with a final image!

Hope you enjoyed my PROCESS, it took as long as you thought it did, but DAMN was it worth it!

Savannah Mall Mural

We got the mural put up last week! Sorry about the awful compression on the red, I didn't take this picture so it couldn't be helped!

And what it looks like down the hall. It's near Burlington Coat Factory if you're in Savannah, the other murals are going up too. They're pretty awesome!

Now, time to start that wall of cats!

Edited Senior Show Pieces

Got some Senior Show edits and a new piece to add to my portfolio. These are all an amalgamation of pastel, gouache, and acrylic.

I feel like they're a little stronger now, hope I'm right! NOW LET'S PRAY I SELL THEM.

YES! I got everything done for the senior show! Did this one last night from about 9PM-4AM. They always take longer than I expect, I think OH I'll be done in a few hours and then I consider skipping my morning class because I worked on this so long.

Oh well! It's done and now I need to work on my artist's statement. Keep it fictional :U

Sketch of Erik the Viking and Loki

I'm really not sure why, but I really dig this sketch! Not quite sure how I'll handle coloring it, but should be a WILD RIDE! Or, just a sit with some paints and pens.

It's of the part in the movie Erik the Viking where he finds out Loki is impersonating a dog-soldier. This is what I came up with based on the script alone, I haven't seen the movie yet. Haha, I bet I'm way off!

Hey! I forgot to mention I'm doing a mural at the Savannah Mall. If you walk into the mall from Burlington Coat Factory in the far south mall in Savannah, GA, you'll meet this giant cowboy. I'll post pictures after he's all painted up!

I love doing murals, I hope to make some money off custom murals after school :D
